Knee Replacement Surgery

Three major type of arthritis of knee are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post traumatic arthritis. Osteoarthritis is most common form of arthritis of knee joint. It usually occurs in the age group of 50 years and above due to progressive wear and tear in articular cartilages (cushion) of the joint. Due to the wear and tear of cartilage bone end comes in contact directly and rubbing each other and producing pain in the joint.

Pain is progressive and hurt during actively standing and walking and in advanced stage pain worsens and occur even in the rest. Stiffness and swelling are causing inability to bend and straighten the knee joint

There is no cure for osteoarthritis only focus of treatment is to relief of the pain. Initial treatment starts with non surgical method which includes analgesic medications, physical therapy, life style modifications and patient education. Once the non surgical methods are no longer effective and knee pain causes disab ility and affecting quality of life your doctor may recommend knee replacement surgery (TKR).
